It's been awhile since I've seen much live music, but I managed to catch 19 bands/acts for at least a couple of songs over the weekend's Mid West Music Fest. My top three:
3. Sharrows. This quintet showed a great variety in vocals, instrumentation, and musical styles. We had to leave early, but came back to catch the end of their set. I loved all of what I heard.
2. The Federales. Call it alt-country, roots, or Americana, it's my favorite style of music, and these guys really came through with it. Nice mix of acoustic guitar, banjo, and electric guitar, and a great selection of covers along with great original songs.
1. Chastity Brown. Not at all what I was expecting from the write-up in the Listener's Guide. I was blown away with her style, vocals, songs, and instrumentation (acoustic guitar and drums, with the electric guitar contributing washes of color). Easily my favorite of the weekend.
